Space Camp 2008 - Mars Academy

Quinn attended the 3 day Mars Academy for space camp this year. This was her second year - last year was Investigate Space. Her interest in science and the space program still boggles my mind, but at the same time makes me so incredibly proud. Things are always more fun with a friend in tow so sticking with tradition Quinn's friend Katy attended camp this year and last. This year it was particularly important to have a pal because they spent two nights in college dorms!! If this didn't freak me out! Dropping her and Katy off in the dorm was a scary fast forward to the future...feel your pain, Linda J. The first night Quinn thought is was so cool to be in a dorm that she called us on the pay phone...too cute!

While at camp she learned about hands on exploration of Mars. The instructor said that the reason this age group was chosen for the Mars Academy is because they will be the first generation who will actually physically go to Mars...whoa, isn't it too hot there. At graduation the kids showed off their smartiness and launched rockets that they had built, dropped a Mars lander and demonstrated their talent in computer programming by sending their groups robot through an obstacle course...what the %^&&? I am serious - my daughter helped program a robot using computer code to make it drive, stop, turn, etc.
So not my strong suit so I am in aw, please forgive me. Her group which was team Foxtrot was the only group out of six that completed its course with no hiccups. A very nice treat for graduation was that Thom's parents came along to see Quinn in all her glory!

She is gearing up for next year already and can't wait until 7th grade when she will go to camp at Cape Canaveral in Florida to enter the young astronaut program- just two more years...yikes. If your kids have never been to one of these camps... I highly recommend.

Each team had their own name...Quinn's was team Foxtrot.
Quinn spent a great deal of time showing friends this photo and the blonde boy in the glasses with his hands on his hips was of particular interest...hmmmm.

The entire Mars Academy group

Wow Jenn - can't believe you've got a future astronaut on your hands. Or at the very least a scientist? Yes, you'll survive when she leaves for college, but you'll shed a lot of tears and miss her terribly. Enjoy those kids NOW!

That is so neat that she is interested in space and all of that! I just think it's great!
